Ennis, Kilkee, Kilrush, Lahinch and Shannon & District Chambers of Commerce have joined forces to form the Clare Chambers of Commerce. This new consortium will collectively challenge and represent issues affecting the business community they serve. Clare Chambers of Commerce will be responsible for representing almost 500 businesses in County Clare.
Spokesperson for the Clare Chamber movement stated that chambers under the umbrella of Clare Chambers of Commerce would now work together and tackle the issues affecting all Clare Businesses. Issues of particular importance include commercial rates, infrastructure, status of Shannon Airport, Ennis General Hospital, waste management, tourism and attracting Industry to County Clare.
“ By joining forces with other Chambers we can avail of the natural synergies that exist between our organisations and pool resources and expertise. Together we can achieve a greater presence and demonstrate we are the voice of businesses in County Clare and therefore a force to be reckoned with “ stated Triona Mc Inerney, Chief Executive , Shannon & District Chamber of Commerce at the launch of the Clare Chambers initiative. The ongoing development of Shannon Airport will be high on the agenda for the new organization, she added.
Under the auspices of Clare Chambers of Commerce it is hoped issues of regional importance will be given additional attention by the relevant authorities. “ It will be difficult to ignore the voice representing almost 500 businesses. We also look forward to working with other organisations to reinforce the current needs of our County. The plight of Ennis General Hospital is high on our agenda “, stated Charles Glynn, Secretary, Kilrush Chamber of Commerce
One of the biggest threats posed to businesses currently recognised by the newly formed Clare Chambers of Commerce is the spiraling commercial rate charges imposed by Clare County Council. “ We understand that the council must generate revenue to allow for ongoing development in the county but not to the detriment of the business community. It must be remembered that the business community fuel the local economy as a whole. Clare Chambers of Commerce will be requesting a meeting with the Manager of Clare County Council to address this issue “ explained Mr. Roger Leyden, President, Ennis Chamber of Commerce.
Sustained development of rural tourism is also high on the Clare Chambers agenda. Tom Byrne, President of Kilkee Chamber of Commerce believes the proposed increases in house levies could impact negatively on the attractiveness of rural areas for investment and must be carefully monitored. “ Development in rural areas must be carefully monitored but at the same time encouraged to maintain the livelihoods of the rural communities. Therefore we must encourage controlled development and not hamper it with the introduction of yet another levy “ he stated.
Each individual chamber will continue to work closely with their members representing their business interests at a Local and National level and offer a range of services including the delivery of training courses, organization of business seminars, issue of Certificates of Origin and the provision of business information and advice.
