Kilrush Host Town Welcomes Team GeorgiaOur Host Country, Georgia Republic will be competing in the following games: Tennis, Table Tennis, Athletics and Football. See team details and photographs.
Team Georgia has grown from a team of 15 to a team of 36 including coaches, team trainers and athletes. Kilrush Host Town will have a very unique opportunity to show the generosity of spirit for which we are renowned, and open our hearts and homes to these wonderful athletes.
Team Georgia will arrive in Shannon on Tuesday 17th June at 4.30 p.m. and will travel via coach to Kilrush, where host families along with the Committee will welcome them to Ireland and West Clare.
On Tuesday evening, there will be a Civic Reception by Kilrush Town Council for the Georgia Republic Delegation. This will not be a late evening as the teams must be in bed by 11.00 p.m. each evening in order to prepare for training the following mornings. Team Georgia will have a number of training sessions around the town.
E.S.B. Moneypoint have offered their sports training ground on the Cooraclare Road and also, their sporting facilities at Moneypoint for Team Georgia's training sessions.
There will be afternoon trips and details will be confirmed shortly and the options include a visit to the Vandeleur Walled Garden for a picnic with traditional Irish music seisiún, a trip to Bunratty Theme Park, a trip Discover Dolphins, a trip down memory lane on the West Clare Railway at Moyasta Junction, and a trip to the Brothers of Charity Workshop and Craftshop.
Another special event will be the Special Olympics Torch Run 'Final Leg'. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a series of relays run by police officers carrying the 'Flame of Hope' to the Opening Ceremonies in Croke Park on June 21. It will be lit in Athens, Greece on June 4 and the flame will arrive in Bangor, Co. Down on June 13. The Final leg team will stop in over 120 communities across Ireland where ceremonies will take place. Team Georgia may attend the ceremony in Ennis.
During their three-day rest and training sessions, we hope Team Georgia will enjoy a taste of our country and culture and that we too will experience their culture. Team Georgia will depart from Kilrush on Friday June 20.
Events prior to the arrival of Team Georgia
'Paint the Feeling', an Art Exhibition to be held in the 177 Host Towns around the island of Ireland. The theme is 'Share the Feeling' and artwork is welcome from everyone, especially artwork from individuals or groups with a learning disability. The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games Host Town Programme will take place for four days prior to the beginning of official Games competition, from June 16-20 2003. Competition follows the Opening Ceremony on June 21, 2003.
Why do we have a Host Town Programme?
The Host Town Programme is one of the most important elements of the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games, when communities from around the island invite our international guests to avail of good old-fashioned Irish hospitality.
As the delegations will have travelled a long distance, they will need time to acclimatise and rest before the Games begin. They will also need a chance to avail of sports training in advance of their competition but, most importantly, the Host Town Programme gives athletes an opportunity to meet the Irish people in communities right around the island.
What happens in a Host Town Programme?
The Host Town Programme involves the whole community. Civic leaders, politicians, the business community, schools, sports and youth groups as well as other local community groups will share in organising and funding the Programme. Jointly, the athletes and their hosts will enjoy an international exchange that will allow athletes to:
Meet with communities and experience unique Irish hospitality, providing a cultural exchange that will enrich the lives of everyone involved. Rest from their journey to Ireland and adjust to the climate Practice their sports prior to the start of official competition Promote public awareness about the capabilities of people with a learning disability Attend the events and community activities designed to welcome them, and share a sense of Irish culture How does the Host Town Programme work?Each participating delegation was matched with a Host Town based on its size and needs. Consideration was given to existing Sister City relationships, unique programmes and facilities in Host Towns or any specific request made by a delegation or a Host Town.The Challenge
We have asked Host Towns to:
Establish a Host Town Committee to organise events. Interact between this Committee and the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games Organising Committee. Provide sporting facilities allowing athletes to train before the Games. Involve Special Olympics athletes and their families in organising their Programme. House and accommodate the international delegation. Promote an understanding of culture, customs and traditions of the visiting delegations, with particular emphasis on the gifts and talents of those with a learning disability. Transport the delegation from the airport to the Host Town and to Dublin for the Games. Provide entertainment for the athletes during their stay. We now have 177 Host Towns hosting 166 international delegations.
